Comb Chair consists of a concrete base, reinforced by steel that emerges from the foundation to form a seat. The sculpture is made exclusively of concrete and steel. Each material relies on the other, both practically and aesthetically.
Our intention was to explore where art and design overlap by creating a tangible and recognizable object. The concrete anchors the sculpture by means of its mass and compressive strength. The seat itself is an elegant extension of the concrete’s requisite steel reinforcement, which, in other circumstances, would otherwise purely serve a utilitarian purpose. The aesthetic expression of this marriage will evolve by virtue of how the materials naturally weather over time.
